Who Am I Becoming? Navigating Identity Through Change
Have you ever felt like you’re no longer who you used to be—but not quite who you’re becoming yet?
That in-between space can feel uncomfortable. Confusing. Even unsettling.
You start to notice it in small ways. The things that once excited you don’t feel the same anymore. The conversations you used to engage in no longer resonate. The version of yourself you once knew so clearly begins to feel… distant.
And then the question shows up:
Who am I becoming?
The In-Between Space
Growth doesn’t happen in a straight line. It often happens in transition—between who you were and who you’re becoming.
This space can feel uncertain because you're shedding old habits, mindsets, and identities, while stepping into something that isn’t fully defined yet.
It’s easy to mistake this feeling for being “lost.”
But you’re not lost.
You’re evolving.
If you’ve ever explored how growth shows up through challenges, this experience often connects to the same ideas I share in Turning Setbacks Into Growth—where discomfort becomes a catalyst for transformation.
Letting Go of Old Versions of You
Change requires release.
Sometimes, the hardest part of growth isn’t learning something new—it’s letting go of what no longer fits.
Old patterns.
Old beliefs.
Old expectations.
Even roles you’ve carried for years.
Letting go doesn’t mean those versions of you were wrong. They served a purpose at the time. But growth asks us to recognize when something has run its course.
This is especially true in relationships, where roles can follow us for years—something I explore further in Family Dynamics: Understanding the Roles We Carry.
When Growth Feels Unfamiliar
I remember sitting with that feeling—questioning everything that once felt certain. I was growing, but it didn’t feel empowering—it felt unfamiliar.
I questioned my direction. My decisions. Even my identity.
But looking back, that phase wasn’t confusion—it was transformation.
I was no longer aligned with the person I used to be, and I hadn’t yet fully stepped into who I was becoming.
That space? That’s where the real growth was happening.
From Awareness to Action
Growth begins with awareness—but it becomes transformation when you choose to act differently.
One of the biggest misconceptions about growth is that clarity comes first.
It doesn’t.
Clarity comes through movement.
Through trying.
Through reflecting.
Through making decisions—even imperfect ones.
You don’t figure out who you’re becoming by waiting. You figure it out by engaging with your life differently.
Becoming with Intention
If you’re in a season of change, instead of asking, “Who am I now?”, try asking:
Who do I want to become?
What values matter most to me right now?
What habits or environments support that version of me?
Becoming is not accidental—it’s intentional.
You’re Not Starting Over
It might feel like everything is shifting, but you’re not starting from scratch.
You’re building from experience.
Every lesson, every challenge, every decision has shaped you. You’re not losing yourself—you’re refining who you are.
Moving Forward
Growth can feel uncomfortable because it requires you to step into the unknown.
But that discomfort is often a sign that something meaningful is happening.
You are allowed to evolve.
You are allowed to outgrow old versions of yourself.
You are allowed to change direction.
And most importantly—you are allowed to become someone new.
Because who you’re becoming is not random.
It’s being shaped by your awareness, your choices, and your willingness to grow.
Becoming isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about having the courage to continue evolving, even when the path isn’t fully clear.
Reflection Prompt
💬 What parts of your old identity are you holding onto—and are they aligned with who you’re becoming?
“You’re not lost—you’re evolving into a version of yourself you haven’t fully met yet.”
